Selfishness (the quality of a vital self) leads to desperate unhappiness. Actually, it leads to hell.
Vanity (feeding the self) is unnecessary. Actually, it leads to selfishness.
Death to self is necessary.
Love (feeding the other) is necessary. Actually, it leads to God.
God is necessary. Actually, since redemption = recreation, He leads to Life.
This post derived inspiration from Barry and Joel... who each wrote wonderful blogs on this topic.

I like your thoughts here, John. They are worth much more than 1 cent.
In my opinion, worth much more than my arcane ramblings, for instance :)
Seriously, you've hit the nail on the head. Here's a question though: is self necessary?
Hmm... interesting thoughts.
Barry, I think self is necessary, but not in the selfish sense. Our existence is important because our testimony, no matter our choice to serve good or evil, gives glory to God and says that His judgments are just.
"If Self is dead, he cannot be offended."
From my perspective:
Kelsey is right in advocating for continued existence... and implying that death to self forms a fatal vacuum.
Thankfully, Redemption = Recreation. Hence: "I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me..."
It always amazes me to think that our selfishness stems from the fear that we will loose something during the act of sharing. However, it is through our sharing that we are able to receive even more than we can possibly imagine.
